pring linkage was needed that would apply preset load in both directions, but utilizes a single compression spring. J.Qattan (Inventor/Designer). Patent Submitted, but not issued.
The original purpose of this design was to provide a fail-safe device to replace a structurally sensitive member in an assembly, whereas when an overload condition is experienced.
1- In compression loading, the linkage would collapse on itself, (becoming shorter, or
2- In tensile loading, the linkage would be extended (becoming longer), until the overload condition is removed. The linkage would then revert to its original length.
There is another Company that sells Self Centering Mechanical Struts.

This Design illustrated above is a marked improvement of the RAYMOND design.
